The Parc de la tête d'or in Lyon (67km)

The Parc de la Tête d'Or is one of the biggest in France. The work of the brothers Denis and Eugène Bühler, the park opened in 1857 although the works had not yet been completed. It is a contemporary of the Central Park in New York, created the same year. Managed today by the city of Lyon, the park offers a vast natural reserve in the heart of the city. Its magnificent trees, rose gardens and zoo have made its reputation. The zoo is one of the oldest in Europe. It accommodates over 1 000 animals: big cats, reptiles, monkeys and exotic birds share the domain. It also possesses a huge artificial lake for boat trips and a puppet theatre ideal for entertaining the children. Joggers and skaters enjoy it in summer and winter alike.
On October 18th 2006, an African plain was inaugurated in the heart of the zoological garden. Several species living in the Savanna live together: zebras, antelopes, ostriches, giraffes...
