The Cuves de Sassenage (57 km)

This touristic site is best discovered in the summer when the heat is overpowering. A haven of coolness and peace, it is part of the natural and historical patrimony of the town. The Cuves are one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné region. Their mythical aspect is extraordinary and the story of Mélusine's tears is as surprising as the formation of the grotto walls, all of which make this fourth wonder a bewitching, disconcerting and moving place to see.

A natural wonder

Set in an environment of well preserved fauna and flora, the climb towards the "Cuves" invites you to contemplate the clear waters of the Furon and the exceptional panorama spreading out towards Grenoble, before disappearing into the coolness and the tranquility of this underground world, in the heart of the Vercors mountain range. The change of scenery is guaranteed to make you forget how close you are to the city... For many years, the "Cuves" have attracted painters, poets, explorers or simple hikers in search of enchantment. The evocative names of the galleries (Hell-hole gallery" or "Tomb Aisle") are said to have inspired Dante in his description of hell in the "Divine Comedy". The "Rataplanades" grotto owes its name to the bats - known as "rataplanades" in the dauphinois dialect - who used to live there (five different species, two of which are extremely rare in Europe and which can still be found in the vicinity of the grotto).
