Hector Berlioz Museum

The soul of the museum

This beautiful bourgeois residence witnessed Hector Berlioz's first years as an apprentice musician, up to the age of 18; the flute and the guitar shaped his musical apprenticeship while he extensively read the works of Virgil and Shakespeare.

Eighteenth century furniture, original scores, correspondence and several of the composer's musical instruments, paintings and engravings all contribute towards bringing to life the spirit of Hector Berlioz throughout the house in which the original decor has been preserved.
Built in 1680, the mansion was bought in 1730 by the composer's great grandfather who almost entirely rebuilt it to restore it to its present appearance. The Berlioz family lived there until the death of Dr. Berlioz, the composer's father, in 1848.
