The Jazz Festival in Vienne (35km)

The Vienne jazz festival was inaugurated in 1981 and is now internationally reputed. It takes place over a two week period every year at the beginning of summer (from June 27th to July 11th, in 2008) in Vienne in the Isère region.
The main venue, and the only venue of the festival for which entry is not free of charge, is the Roman amphitheatre, which can accommodate over 7 000 persons. Numerous famous jazz musicians have performed here: Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Claude Nougaro, Michel Petrucciani, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Lionel Hampton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner and many others.
Many concerts are also dedicated to "cousins" of jazz music: funk, blues, gospel, Brazil, Cuba, gypsy...

The festival takes place every day, throughout the town:

  • The Midnight Club, Italian-style theatre in the centre of the town, with internationally renowned performances
  • The Cybèle gardens, every afternoon, where you will find a mix of regional artists and big bands from French and foreign music schools
  • The Jazz Academy with courses and master classes
  • The Jazz Mix, late night club in a "magic mirror" (wooden big top from the north of Europe), proposes a festive, trendy late night show.

The festival has been involved, since 2004, in introducing jazz to the young public. For example, over 6 000 children from the surrounding primary schools are invited to a yearly show which retraces some of the most memorable times of the history of jazz.
